About the game
“The Arkham Horror. The Third Edition is a new edition of the world-famous cooperative adventure based on the crazy myths of Lovecraft. The game is released a damn dozen years after the release of the previous part, which is very symbolic… Arkham (and the world) is once again in danger. Creepy creatures that usually inhabit outside of our time and space make their way into our world. So mystical events, encounters with the supernatural, battles with monsters, travel to other worlds, confrontation with the Ancients and other devilry await you again!
The game itself has been greatly transformed and is an improved and reworked version of the game with new mechanics. The first thing that catches your eye is the composite modular field, which makes the game more compact, variable and easier to use. The field consists of neighborhood and street tiles that connect different locations.
The game now offers four scenarios, each with its own Ancient and its own playing field. You will be able to challenge Cthulhu, Azathoth, Hastur and Shub-Niggurath, whose power in the material world will increase as the game progresses and due to the failures of the detectives. To win, you still need to gather clues, close gates, and destroy monsters, but now each scenario offers its own victory conditions that players are initially unaware of. The scenarios are arranged in such a way that each adventure will be different from the previous one.
Each detective you play as is unique, has its own story, motive and set of characteristics, both main (stamina and intelligence) and secondary (observation, strength, will, etc.). By the way, unlike the previous version, here you can choose the appropriate starting equipment yourself.
How to play?
The game is played in rounds, and the rounds are divided into phases. It’s up to the players to decide who walks and in what order.
- Action Phase – Each player can perform two different actions. This can be moving, obtaining resources, attacking a monster and dodging it, trading with other players, exploring the location, and other actions
- Monster Phase – Monsters are activated, attack players, or prepare for their next moves
- Contact phase – the detectives play the contact cards, that is, the various events that happen to them
- Myth Phase – Detectives draw two tokens that have a strong impact on the game. New monsters, clues, tokens, etc. may appear in the game.
All checks, as usual, are resolved by rolling the dice. So, turn after turn, players get into trouble and try to get out of them, investigating the scenario along the way.
Who won?
Arkham Horror is a fully cooperative game, so all players win and lose together. To win, you will have to fulfill a number of conditions that depend on the scenario, but initially they are not obvious – players will have to conduct their own investigation and come to the end, or ingloriously disappear in the whirlpool of wild horror.
